Review: If you want to write by Brenda Ueland

When I was looking for books about how to write, I was so excited to have found the book If you want to write by Brenda Ueland. There are many books out there on teaching and guiding you on how to write well. This book, first published in 1938 and republished in 1987, is a very refreshing read.

Whenever I look for books that help my business and now my writing, I always go for the ones that will inspire me and make me feel connected. Most of the books I chose and recommended here in my blog are the ones that were written straight from the author’s heart. This book is one of them. If you want to write is filled with genuine advice for new writers – like me. I listed the chapter titles below. As you notice, each is filled with inspiration and I guarantee it will motivate you to start writing and help you to continue to write.

How I motivate myself to continue writing

Since I am now writing each weekday for my blog, I will usually prepare all content a week in advance. This is to make sure that I am able to post each day.

Sometimes the words come so easy and I’m able to write without any difficulties. Sometimes I stare at a blank screen and am unable to type anything. Every time I face this stumbling block I use my secret exercise to get back to continue with my writing.

Juggling the day work and writing for my blog

Since I am starting to write for my blog regularly, I found myself frantically juggling between tending my business and writing everyday for my blog. My handmade bags and accessories business is already established and I would like to have a little space so I can start my writing. Both require a considerably large amount of writing, but they are two different types of writing.

My business involves mostly technical writing like updating the content of the web site, answering email from customers who asking about the cost of combined shipping, updating the book as well as the business plan. It is all about business, very straightforward and kind of dry…

Review: Articles for Magazine

Since my last post about how I started to write again, I have been reading several books about writing for magazines and how to get published. This book, “How to write and sell magazine articles” by Shirley Biagi caught my attention. It is only 131 pages, but the content is highly informative. The author is an accomplished writer and an award winning journalism Professor.

As I am back with my writing again, I have started by taking small steps. I have found this book to be a good guide for me to make the first steps to reach my goal which is to get published in magazines. Here are the chapters and a brief summary:

How I start to write again

The writing bug has stung me again! I postponed my writing for quite sometime due to relocation, starting and growing my handmade bags and accessories business. However, the SewUseful Contest sponsored by Etsy.com and Instructables, which I entered last month, has given me the rash to write again! It started after I submitted my Instructions on How to Make a Walker Bag with a Professional Touch.

As a handbag designer, I use a lot of illustrations of how I make new designs and short hand that no one understands but me. I never write a complete manual or instructions on how to make my bags. So, I decided to join the contest to see if I can write a complete instruction. Boy, it was difficult to write at first! However, I was determined to complete the writing anyway and submit it after several revisions and making the walker bag (and taking pictures to illustrate the steps) based on the instructions I wrote.

When the results were announced, my instructions on how to make the walker bag were selected as one of the runner-ups! I was ecstatic!
