Skepticism about whether to obtain or not a creative writing degree is a never ending debate. If you want to be a successful writer and plan to pursue a teaching career, you’ll need a degree in creative writing. Even if you just want to be a writer, it’s better to have a degree in creative writing—if you have the opportunity to do so.
The benefits of getting a degree in creative writing:
• The formal class will give you structure and discipline to your writing;
• You have someone who’ll monitor your progress. Writing a novel, for instance, is a lonely job. With guidance, you’ll get feedback from an expert;
• You’ll learn correct elements to use in writing your novel, or other types of writing you’re interested;
• Feedback from fellow students will nurture and motivate you to write and be the best writer you can be;
• You have the opportunity to meet with publishers or agents. This will come handy when you shop your completed novel.
If attending formal classes isn’t possible, an online creative writing degree is another option. It also saves time and money. With an online class, you can do it in your free time—from the comfort of your home or office. Many schools offer an online creative writing degree. You can choose the one that’s a perfect fit for you.
Having said all that, I also understand the reason behind the skepticism about getting a creative writing degree. I believe it’s due to ignorance, believing you can find a job with a degree in creative writing. Getting a degree formally or an online writing degree in creative writing won’t promise you a job, but nearly every job requires good writing skills.
For me, you don’t need to go to a formal school or obtain an online creative writing degree in order to write a novel. You can learn the techniques at your own pace. Many books on writing fiction will help you to master the elements in a novel. With self discipline, determination and constructive feedback, you can be a successful writer.
