Sprucing my blog site with social media and RSS

Since I officially opened my blog online, it is time to getting it out to the social media like del.ici.ous, digg, reddit, stumble upon, squidoo and more.

What is Social Media

According to Wikipedia, social media are online technologies and practices that people use to share content, opinions, insights, experiences, perspectives and media themselves.

Social media can take many different forms, including text, images, audio, and video. The social media sites typically use tools like message boards, forums, podcasts, bookmarks, communities, wikis, weblogs etc.

I decided to choose four social media. They are:

Social bookmarking: Del.ici.ous

Del.ici.ous - A social bookmarks manager. Using bookmarklets, you can add bookmarks to your list and categorize them.

News Aggregation: Reddit, Stumble Upon and Digg

Digg is all about user powered content. Everything is submitted and voted on by the Digg community.

Reddit - User-generated news links. Votes promote stories to the front page.

stumbleupon is the best way to discover great websites, videos, photos, blogs and more.

RSS

Other than social bookmarks, I also use RSS feed. According to Wikipedia:

RSS (which, in its most recent format, stands for “Really Simple Syndication”) is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines or podcasts. An RSS document, which is called a “feed”, “web feed”, or “channel”, contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with their favorite web sites in an automated manner that’s easier than checking them manually.

What I need to do about it?

I’ve known about these types of social media for quite some time, but just don’t have the opportunity to research them. Now that I have my blog, I’ve started to look into these social media tools and found out everyone especially bloggers are using them! So I’ve decided to have it on my blog for visitors to bookmark my blog content.

Bookmark your favorite content using the social media and get the latest content using RSS

If you read my blog and you would like to bookmark it, you can use one or all of them. You can also select one or several RSS to notify you of my latest posts in my blog.

Simplifying my bookmark and RSS using addthis.com widgets

In order to minimize clutter, I’ve decided to use one button for each social media bookmark and RSS list. The online readers can click on the button and choose their favorite bookmark site and their RSS feed like yahoo, google and more. I added the bookmark button under each of my blog content and put the RSS button on the right sidebar.

That’s it for now. Since I am new to this social media thing I will investigate it further and give more info about it in my next writing.
